Best Placements for a First Tattoo

By TatSeek Editorial Updated Sep 29, 2026 1 min read

A first tattoo is as much about the experience as the design. The best first placements are ones that hurt less, heal easily, age well and can be covered or shown as you choose. Here are the spots that tick most boxes, and the ones worth saving for later.

Outer forearm

The most popular placement in our catalogue for a reason: moderate pain, easy healing, a flat surface for almost any design, and you can see it yourself. It is visible in short sleeves, so think about work and dress codes.

Upper arm and shoulder

Among the least painful places to be tattooed, with plenty of room and good long-term aging. Easy to hide under a T-shirt sleeve, easy to show. A classic first placement that also leaves space to grow into a half sleeve later.

Calf and thigh

Large, fleshy areas that handle bigger designs with relatively low pain, and they are simple to cover. The outer thigh in particular is one of the more comfortable spots. Healing needs a little care: avoid tight trousers rubbing a fresh piece.

Ankle β€” small pieces only

Popular for small, delicate designs, but the skin is thin over bone, so it is more painful than it looks, and friction from shoes and socks makes healing trickier. Good for a tiny first piece if you plan the timing.

Worth saving for later

  • Ribs, sternum and spine β€” among the most painful spots, with long sessions.
  • Hands, fingers and feet β€” fade and blur fastest, and many artists advise against them for a first piece.
  • Neck and face β€” very visible and hard to take back.

Frequently asked questions

Fleshy areas with fewer nerve endings - the outer upper arm, shoulder, outer thigh and calf - are generally the least painful.
Where should I get my first tattoo if I want to hide it?
The upper arm, shoulder, upper back and thigh are easy to cover with everyday clothing.
Is the wrist a good place for a first tattoo?
It is popular for small pieces, but the skin is thin and it is very visible. The outer forearm is a more forgiving alternative.
