New School — Cartoon Energy in Ink

By TatSeek Editorial Updated Sep 29, 2026 2 min read

New School is what happens when the bold outlines of Old School meet cartoons, graffiti and video games. Characters get huge eyes and exaggerated proportions, colours are saturated and often neon, and everything has a sense of movement. It is loud on purpose — and when it is done well, it is one of the most technically demanding styles there is.

What New School looks like

  • Exaggeration: distorted, caricatured proportions — big heads, bulging eyes, stretched perspective.
  • Colour: bright, fully saturated palettes with strong contrast, often with white highlights.
  • Bold outlines: heavy lines keep the design readable despite all the colour and detail.
  • Subjects: animals with personality, pop-culture characters, food, skulls and sweets turned into cartoons, comic and cartoon imagery.

Is New School a good fit for you?

It suits people who want their tattoo to be fun, expressive and visible. It works best at medium to large sizes — the upper arm, calf, thigh and back give the characters room — and less well tiny, where the detail has nowhere to go. If you want something quiet or minimal, this is not the style; if you want a tattoo people smile at, it may be exactly right.

How it ages

Like Old School, New School is built on strong outlines and solid colour, which helps it hold up. Colour does soften with time and sun, and bright yellows and pastels are usually the first to lose intensity. Sun protection keeps the palette lively for longer, and a colour boost after some years is common for large pieces.

Pain, sessions and cost

Solid colour packing takes longer and can be more uncomfortable than linework, so a medium New School piece is often a multi-hour session and larger work spans several. Expect the price to follow the time: this is rarely a budget style at size. Our cost guide has live ranges by size.

How to spot good New School work

  • Colour is smooth and fully packed — no patchy, grainy areas in healed photos.
  • The design still reads clearly from a distance thanks to strong outlines and contrast.
  • Characters look original rather than traced from a cartoon; good artists redraw a reference in their own style.

New School vs. similar styles

New School grew out of Old School and shares its bold lines, but throws out the restricted palette and flat colour. Neo-Traditional also updates Old School, but keeps things more illustrative and elegant; New School goes for cartoon energy. Anime / Manga tattoos are a close cousin with their own visual rules.

Frequently asked questions

Does New School colour fade?
Bright colours soften over the years, especially in the sun. Strong outlines keep the design readable, and a colour refresh on large pieces is common.
What size should a New School tattoo be?
Medium to large. The style relies on exaggerated detail and contrast, which needs room — a palm-sized piece or bigger on the arm, calf, thigh or back works best.
